Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest blockbuster, Jailer 2, has created a major milestone in Tamil cinema by becoming the first Tamil-language film to cross ₹800 crore in worldwide box-office collections.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the action sequel reached an estimated worldwide gross of ₹808 crore on its 18th day in theatres, according to figures reported by Hindustan Times. The achievement comes shortly after the film surpassed previous records to become the highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time.
At 75, Rajinikanth continues to draw audiences to cinemas, with the film delivering an exceptional commercial performance across domestic and international markets. Its latest box-office total has also placed it ahead of several major Indian blockbusters.
Jailer 2 reportedly opened with an impressive response, collecting approximately ₹400 crore during its extended four-day opening weekend. The film maintained its strong performance through the Navratri and Dussehra holiday period, benefiting from increased cinema attendance.
Although collections slowed during the middle of its third week, the movie experienced a recovery over the third weekend. On its 18th day, it earned an estimated ₹11.50 crore net in India.
The film’s third-weekend earnings reached ₹26.40 crore, taking its total domestic collection to approximately ₹456 crore net. Its domestic gross reportedly reached ₹533 crore.
The sequel has also performed strongly across major regional markets. It has collected more than ₹60 crore in each of four important territories: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh-Telangana.
Overseas markets have played a significant role in pushing the film beyond the ₹800-crore mark. International collections have approached $29 million, contributing to its reported worldwide gross of ₹808 crore.
With this performance, Jailer 2 has overtaken the reported lifetime worldwide collections of Aamir Khan’s PK, which earned approximately ₹769 crore, and Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which collected around ₹807 crore.
The film is now approaching another major target, with the ₹850-crore mark in sight. However, its future theatrical performance could face competition from upcoming releases, including Ramayana, which is expected to influence audience interest and box-office collections.
Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the character introduced in the original Jailer. The sequel also features returning cast members Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik.
New additions to the cast include S J Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. The film also features special appearances by Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff.
The combination of Rajinikanth’s popularity, a returning character and a large ensemble cast has helped Jailer 2 attract audiences across multiple markets. Its ₹808-crore worldwide collection marks a historic achievement for Tamil cinema and sets a new commercial benchmark for the industry.
