The Mirzapur universe may not be finished yet, with director Gurmmeet Singh suggesting that another chapter of the popular crime franchise could be on the way.
Speaking in an interview with SCREEN, Singh discussed the future of the franchise following the theatrical release of Mirzapur: The Film. While he did not reveal specific details about a potential follow-up project, his comments indicated that the story could continue in a new format.
Singh said he did not know exactly what the future held for the franchise but was confident that Mirzapur would return. His remarks have added to speculation among fans about what could come next for the crime-thriller universe.
The director also indicated that the format and direction of the next chapter have not yet been finalized. This means there is currently no confirmed information about whether the franchise’s next project will be another film, a new series or a different continuation of the story.
For now, audiences have been introduced to Mirzapur on the big screen through Mirzapur: The Film. The project expands the franchise beyond its successful streaming-series format and brings several familiar names from the universe together.
The film features Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Jitendra Kumar, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Abhishek Banerjee and Mohit Malik.
Singh has also spoken about the certification process for Mirzapur: The Film and the challenges involved in adapting an adult-oriented franchise for theatrical release.
According to the director, the filmmaking team had to make changes to certain portions of the movie to meet the requirements of the Central Board of Film Certification, commonly known as the CBFC.
Singh explained that the certification authorities were aware of Mirzapur’s adult themes and its established position as a pop-culture franchise. At the same time, concerns surrounding younger audiences accessing adult-rated content were part of the certification discussion.
The director said the team took those considerations into account while making the adjustments required for the film’s certification.
Mirzapur: The Film was released in cinemas on September 4, marking a new stage for the franchise after its popularity as a streaming crime thriller.
The original Mirzapur universe developed a large following through its characters, criminal rivalries and dramatic storylines. Moving the franchise to cinemas created an opportunity to present the world on a larger theatrical scale.
However, despite Singh’s comments about the franchise returning, no official details have been announced regarding the next instalment.
There is currently no confirmed title, release date, production schedule or complete cast announcement for the next chapter. Further information will depend on decisions by the filmmakers and production team.
For now, Singh’s comments provide an indication that the Mirzapur universe could continue, while leaving the details of its next chapter open.
